Shiba Inu Care Guide
The Shiba Inu is an alert, spirited Japanese breed known for its fox-like expression, bold personality, and independent nature. One of Japan’s oldest native breeds, the Shiba Inu was originally developed for hunting small game in mountainous terrain. Their agility, confidence, and keen senses made them excellent hunters and adaptable companions. Today, Shibas are beloved for their loyal yet independent temperament, expressive faces, and charming quirks.
Temperament

- Independent yet loyal
- Smart and expressive
- Energetic and agile
- Reserved with strangers
Exercise & Play
Shiba Inus need 45–60 minutes of exercise daily, including brisk walks, controlled off-leash play in secure areas, and mentally stimulating activities. They enjoy agility-style games, scent work, and interactive toys that challenge their sharp minds. Because of their strong prey drive and independent streak, recall training requires extra consistency and caution.
Grooming & Care
Their double coat sheds moderately year-round and heavily during seasonal blowouts. Weekly brushing—daily during shedding seasons—helps manage loose fur. Routine care includes nail trimming, dental hygiene, and regular ear checks. Shibas are naturally clean dogs, often grooming themselves much like cats.
Health & Wellness
Shibas may be prone to allergies, hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and dental disease. Maintaining a healthy weight and monitoring skin and coat health are key to long-term wellness. Regular veterinary checkups help track joint, eye, and allergy-related concerns.

Training & Socialization
Shiba Inus respond best to patient, positive reinforcement training. Their independent nature means consistency and clear boundaries are essential. Early socialization helps build confidence and develop well-rounded behavior around other dogs and people. They enjoy mentally engaging training that offers variety.
