Maltese Care Guide
The Maltese is a gentle, affectionate toy breed known for its silky white coat, expressive dark eyes, and playful, loving personality. One of the oldest toy breeds, the Maltese is associated with the Mediterranean island of Malta and has been a cherished companion of nobility for thousands of years. Today, they are devoted lap dogs who bond closely with their families and bring charm and cheer to any home.

- Alert and fearless
- Devoted to family
- Charming and sweet
Exercise & Play
Maltese need about 20–30 minutes of daily activity, including short walks and indoor play. They enjoy toy games, short fetch sessions, and simple tricks. Because of their small size, they get much of their exercise indoors, but daily walks provide important mental stimulation and socialization.
Grooming & Care
Their long, silky white coat requires daily brushing to prevent mats, or many owners choose a shorter “puppy cut” for easier care. Regular baths, professional grooming every 4–6 weeks, nail trims, and dental care are important. Wiping around the eyes daily helps reduce tear staining.
Health & Wellness
Maltese may be prone to dental disease, luxating patella, tracheal collapse, and liver shunts. Their small mouths make dental care especially important. Regular veterinary visits, careful handling, and keeping them at a healthy weight support long-term wellness.
- Brush teeth daily
- Use a harness instead of a collar
- Monitor for limping or skipping steps
- Schedule regular dental cleanings
Training & Socialization
Maltese are intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement and gentle, consistent training. Housetraining can take extra patience, so a consistent routine helps. Early socialization builds confidence and helps prevent small-dog wariness or excessive barking.
Living With
Living with a Maltese means having a loving, playful companion who wants to be close to you. They adapt well to apartments and smaller homes and do best with families who are home often. Their affectionate nature and sweet charm make them wonderful companions.
